The therapy, called CAR-T, consists of extracting blood from patients, modifying white blood cells with genetic engineering and infusing them again, already with an increased capacity to destroy cancer cells. The German doctor&#039;s team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.fau.eu\/person\/georg-schett\/\">Georg Schett<\/a> has now managed to use this revolutionary strategy against systemic lupus erythematosus, an enigmatic autoimmune disease that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMra1100359\">affects 0.1%<\/a> of the world population. Four women and one man have been symptom-free and medication-free for up to 17 months after a single treatment with CAR-T.
