This circulation of rocks has literally shaped the world we live in today, from our islands and continents to our mountain ranges.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 1 --><\/p>\n<p>To know how our world has evolved, well, <strong>we need to have more than just a still photo<\/strong>: Instead of a static 3D image, a moving image is necessary that allows us to know how it has evolved and, eventually, how it will evolve.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 2 --><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>4D<\/h2>\n<p>A team of nine universities, led by Cardiff University, s<a href=\"https:\/\/news.liverpool.ac.uk\/2020\/05\/20\/project-aims-to-create-first-4d-maps-of-earths-mantle\/\">and has proposed creating<\/a> the first 4-D maps of the Earth&#039;s mantle combining cutting-edge technology with the latest high-performance computing. <strong>The fourth dimension is time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 3 --><\/p>\n<p>The project work packages combine dynamic topography, geochemistry, petrology and geomagnetism. <\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 4 --><\/p>\n<div class=\"desvio-container\">\n<div class=\"desvio\">\n<div class=\"desvio-figure js-desvio-figure\">\n   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xatakaciencia.com\/geologia\/la-tectonica-de-placas-pudo-haberse-puesto-en-marcha-gracias-al-impacto-de-meteoritos\"><br \/>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.blogs.es\/bbf936\/fotonoticia_20170928105640_1920\/375_142.jpg\" alt=\"La tect\u00f3nica de placas pudo haberse puesto en marcha gracias al impacto de meteoritos\"><br \/>\n   <\/a>\n  <\/div>\n<div class=\"desvio-summary\">\n<div class=\"desvio-taxonomy js-desvio-taxonomy\">\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xatakaciencia.com\/geologia\/la-tectonica-de-placas-pudo-haberse-puesto-en-marcha-gracias-al-impacto-de-meteoritos\" class=\"desvio-taxonomy-anchor\">In Xataka Science<\/a>\n   <\/div>\n<p>   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xatakaciencia.com\/geologia\/la-tectonica-de-placas-pudo-haberse-puesto-en-marcha-gracias-al-impacto-de-meteoritos\" class=\"desvio-title js-desvio-title\">Plate tectonics may have been set in motion by meteorite impacts<\/a>\n  <\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This way we will be able to know the temperature, density and speed of the mantle over a period of millions of years. As the main researcher of the project explains, <strong>Huw Davies<\/strong>, from Cardiff University:<\/p>\n<p><!-- BREAK 5 --><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>By combining all this information, we will have a much clearer understanding of how our planet works.
