Extraordinary evidence

Astrophysicist Carl Sagan said that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. If you claim to have found a new species of beetle – 350,000 have already been described – you will only have to present a handful of anatomical data to convince your colleagues. But if what he claims is to have discovered life on Venus, you will have to have a very good grip on your evidence or, otherwise, you will be exposed not only to the sadistic scrutiny of other scientists, but also to making a horrible fool of yourself in front of the entire world.
