The archipelago, located approximately 230 kilometers east of Central America and approximately 750 kilometers north of the Colombian mainland, was declared a Seaflower World Biosphere Reserve in 2000. This reserve not only includes the islands and their remote cays; it also forms the 101st largest biosphere reserve in the Caribbean Sea, covering an area of more than 300,000 square kilometers.
