The beginning of this story resembles a John Le Carré novel, the plot is just as intriguing, and the ending can be much more apocalyptic. In the 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, the US military excavated a military base, Camp Century, within the ice sheet high above the Arctic Circle. The real purpose was to carry out a top secret mission, called 'Project Iceworm', to hide 600 nuclear missiles under the ice near the Soviet Union. As a cover, the facility was presented as a polar scientific station.
