The CILAC Forum is holding a new colloquium with regional leaders, focusing on the Ocean Decade. Since its launch, more than 33,000 people have participated in CILAC's #CienciaEnMovimiento series of colloquia.
Since its launch in 2021, the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development has united thousands of key stakeholders in the marine field to advance science, infrastructure, partnerships, and capacity to address the 10 challenges posed by this initiative. Recently, 46 new Decade Actions were added, bringing the total to more than 600 projects seeking to generate a significant impact on ocean science worldwide.
In April 2024, the Ocean Decade Conference, held in Barcelona, drew more than 1,500 in-person attendees and thousands of virtual participants. This conference, organized by IOC/UNESCO and Spain, underscored the success of the Decade, highlighting the creation of more than 50 international programs that seek to address ocean challenges through collaboration among various sectors of society. The Barcelona Declaration established future priorities for the joint development of activities that address ocean challenges from a regional and global perspective, with a special emphasis on the needs of SIDS and least developed countries.
What are the main reasons why governments in the region should pay attention to the oceans? What are the main risks of not doing so? What are the main policy measures that should be taken? What role do science and technology play in these matters?
During a new virtual meeting of #CienciaEnMovimiento of CILAC, these questions will be addressed, led by Juan Camilo Forero Hauzeur (Executive Secretary of the Colombian Ocean Commission and Director of the Colombian Antarctic Program), Mariana Andrade (Ocean Decade Advisory Committee, Brazil and Co-founder of Bloom Ocean), and Paula Sierra (INVEMAR, Coordinator of research and information for marine and coastal management), moderated by Guillermo Anllo (UNESCO).
The meeting will take place on September 25 at 5 p.m. URU/ARG/BRA – 3 p.m. COL/PER.
It will be broadcast live on YouTube, and also on Zoom. REGISTER HERE
