The CILAC Forum is holding a new colloquium with regional leaders, focusing on the link between artificial intelligence and public policy. Since its launch, more than 32,000 people have participated in the CILAC #CienciaEnMovimiento series of colloquia.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has evolved from a science-fiction concept to a driver of significant change, impacting multiple sectors, from automation and recommendation systems to creativity and decision-making. While some believe we have achieved human-level intelligence, others argue we are far from such an achievement. This rapid advancement raises fundamental questions about ethics, equity, and sustainability, and generates a debate about how to develop and regulate AI in ways that respect fundamental human values and ensure an equitable distribution of its benefits.

In a new CILAC virtual meeting, AI experts from various fields, including international organizations, academia, and the business sector, will gather to discuss these crucial topics. The goal is to offer a comprehensive understanding of the technical advances and social and political implications of AI, providing policymakers and the general public with tools to address the challenges this technology presents.

What do we understand as Artificial Intelligence and how is it characterized? Is it possible to promote ethical principles in AI systems, especially with regard to transparency and fairness in decision-making? What should be the role of public policy? What impact do AI-based recommendation systems have on the formation of filter bubbles and social polarization, and how can they be mitigated?

María Vanina Martínez (CSIC researcher, Spain, Konex Award 2023 in Information Sciences and AI), Natalia González (expert in AI ethics, technology policy and inclusion), and Cristina Martínez Pinto (director and founder of PIT Policy Lab) address these issues, moderated by Eleonora Lamm (UNESCO).

The meeting will take place on August 28 at 5 p.m. URU/ARG/BRA – 3 p.m. COL/PER.
It will be broadcast live on YouTube, and also on Zoom. REGISTER HERE

For those who want to learn more about how AI works and what to expect from its development, the Policy Document prepared by UNESCO for CILAC will be released soon. What are we talking about when we talk about Artificial Intelligence?, with the signature of María Vanina Martínez.
