A study considers it possible to reduce agricultural land by half without reducing production

The food system causes a third of greenhouse gas emissions of the world and only agriculture is responsible for 70% freshwater extractions. A recent study of Nature Sustainability Remember these figures and conclude that it is possible to give back to nature what is its own while maintaining the level of production. The results show that half of the agricultural space, that is, a total of 576 million hectares that correspond to more than 10 times the surface of Spain, are not necessary. Professor Josep Peñuelas, expert in Center for Ecological Research and Forest Applications (CREAF) who led the project, assures: “We are left without soil with natural vegetation and it is a serious problem for the global microbiome and the cycle of elements.”
