Life in space, without protection against radiation, extreme cold or heat or the vacuum itself, seems impossible. However, research now shows that there is an organism on Earth capable of surviving out there for years. And it achieves this collectively: the microbes in the outer layers of the colony succumb to ultraviolet rays but protect those living inside with their death. The thicker the crop, the longer it lasts.
