A team of Spanish scientists announced on July 27, 2018 the discovery of new geometric shapes: the scutoids, a species of twisted prisms first observed in the salivary glands of fruit flies. And then the unimaginable happened. A fever for scutoids broke out in popular culture. Without the intervention of researchers, many companies put scutoid-shaped products on sale: earrings, glasses, rings, flower pots, honey jars. The scutoids appeared until in it Show by Stephen Colbert, one of the most watched programs on American television. This Wednesday, the parents of these geometric objects announce a new discovery: the mathematical principle that explains how scutoid-shaped cells are connected inside living beings.
