During CILAC 2018, the Secretary of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation of Argentina, Lino Barañao, proposed his country as the venue for the next edition of the Open Science Forum, in 2020.
The Secretary, who also participated in CILAC 2016, was part of numerous panels in this edition in Panama City. His proposal that his country be the host of CILAC 2020 was made during his intervention at the high-level round table on Regional Cooperation in Science, Technology and Innovation and Sustainable Development.
“We would like CILAC to take place in Buenos Aires in 2020,” were the words of Barañao, which immediately received applause from the audience and from Lidia Brito, Director of the UNESCO Office in Montevideo, who was the moderator of the round table that was developing.
After his announcement, Baraño was interviewed by the SENACYT press team at CILAC, where he had the opportunity to explain why it is important for his country to host an event of these characteristics. “We have an important critical mass of researchers who would be interested in participating in the different topics that are usually discussed at CILAC,” he stated in the report.
In each edition of the CILAC Forum, the host city becomes the capital of science in Latin America and the Caribbean during that week, since, in addition to hosting the Forum, a wide range of related parallel events are organized – from Workshops scientific journalism and scientific diplomacy, to regional and global networking sessions on various related problems - as well as a wide range of activities to disseminate science among citizens.
