In Recognition of the work of the medical community around the world in the fight against COVID-19, this plate has been placed on the rover Perseverance that NASA will launch to Mars on July 20.
The mission installed a plaque on the left side of the chassis, between the middle and rear wheels.
COVID-19
The graphic on the aluminum plate of 8 by 13 centimeters represents the Earth, supported by the medical community, represented by the ancient symbol of the serpent-entwined rod.
A line representing the trajectory of a spacecraft rises from central Florida toward Mars, represented as a small dot in the background.
According to Matt Wallace, Perseverance deputy project manager at JPL:
We wanted to show our appreciation for those who have put their personal well-being on the line for the good of others. It is our hope that when future generations travel to Mars and encounter our rover, they will be reminded that there were such people on Earth in the year 2020.
