«Even so, everyone has to do their own thing. You can change things, today and every day, with simple gestures, such as going out with your own water bottle, coffee cup or shopping bag, recycling the plastic products you buy, not buying products that contain microplastics and offering volunteer to clean your community. — António Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations

As part of World Oceans Day, celebrated on June 8, CILAC shares a series of photographs related to water and raising awareness of the care of the oceans. According to United Nations, pollution caused by plastic is causing enormous damage to our marine resources.

The pollution, which has reached critical levels in recent years, is caused on your 80% by humans. This is equivalent to about 8 million tons of plastic annually, which harms wildlife, fishing, and tourism. Ocean pollution results in annual losses of $8 billion in damage to the marine ecosystem.

The care of water resources is of great importance for our region, and will play a prominent role during #CILAC18, in the following sessions:

  • Innovation, Science and Technology for Hydrological Monitoring (10/22, 11:15 a.m.).
  • Challenges and innovations for sustainable access for good quality drinking water (10/23, 10:15am).
  • High-level session: water resources management and sustainable development (10/24, 10:15 a.m.).
  • Water Culture: Reviewing the concept to guarantee water and sanitation for all in Latin America and the Caribbean (10/24, 2:30 p.m.).
