We are pleased to announce that Panama City, Panama, will host the next Open Scientific Forum for Latin America and the Caribbean: CILAC 2018. The event will take place from October 24 to 26, 2018 and is a cooperation between a number of important regional actors such as the National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation of the Republic of Panama – SENACYT, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Regional Science Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNESCO Montevideo), the Municipal Government of Panama Council of Rectors of Panama, the Association of Universities of Montevideo (AUGM), the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB) and the Ibero-American University Council (CUIB)

This regional initiative was created in 2016 by the UNESCO Regional Science Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, in Montevideo, Uruguay, where the first Open Science Forum for Latin America and the Caribbean began, with the support of regional actors. and national. The forum takes place every two years and alternates from one city in Latin America and the Caribbean to another.

CILAC 2018 is formulated around the motto “Science Connects,” appropriate for Panama City, home to one of the great engineering achievements of the 20th century… the Panama Canal. The Canal connects North America with South America, the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean, while the CILAC, through the sciences, connects Latin America and the Caribbean and beyond.

The clear objective of this initiative is to influence scientific policies and decision-making processes in the region, through the promotion of dialogue between science, politics and civil society, using contemporary tools and mechanisms. CILAC 2018, the second edition of the Open Science Forum for Latin America and the Caribbean will be held within the framework of Panama's "Science Week", which will take effect from October 18 to 26, 2018 and will be joined to the Panamanian Association for the Advancement of Science (APANAC), National Congress of Science and Technology, and the Youth Forum.

The official launch of CILAC 2018 is scheduled for June 2017.
