With a packed agenda of debate and reflection meetings, the First Open Science Forum of Latin America and the Caribbean continues here today: Transforming the Region, which has extensive assistance from national and foreign experts.

One of the highlights of the day will be a workshop on Women in Science: the possibilities are endless, in which renowned scientists from the region participate and will be attended by Lidia Brito, director of the UNESCO Regional Science Office for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Seema Kumar, vice president of Innovation, Global Health and Political Communication at Johnson & Johnson, will also be present.
This event is considered the largest regional science, technology and innovation activity in recent times and ministers and other authorities from more than 15 countries in America, Europe and Africa participate, as well as rectors from 30 public universities in the region.
This Thursday, several conferences, workshops and discussions linked to the thematic axes will also be held: scientific policies; universities for development; cultivating science and citizenship; sciences for the 2030 Agenda and for business innovation.
In the evening a Lyric Gala will be held with the participation of the Symphony Orchestra and the Sodre National Choir, whose program includes works by Carl María von Weber, Richard Wagner, Giacomo Puccini and Giuseppe Verdi.
When opening the meeting the day before, the president of Uruguay, Tabaré Vázquez, highlighted the pioneering nature of the Forum's open nature and regional dimension and mentioned two experiences of his country that are framed within the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.
In this regard, he referred to the Basic Computing Educational Connectivity Plan for Online Learning (Ceibal) and the Ibirapitá Plan for the inclusion of older adults.
He said that these initiatives integrate knowledge, science, technology, citizenship and 'Politics with a capital letter', by enclosing values and principles in the sense of accompanying people in the different stages of life.
This forum is organized by the Regional Office for Latin America of Sciences of UNESCO, the Municipality of Montevideo, the National Agency for Innovation and Research, the University of the Republic and the regional Association of Universities Group Montevideo.
