Melina Furman, speaker at CILAC 2018, presented her latest book at the International Book Fair in Montevideo
Melina Furman has a degree in Biology from the University of Buenos Aires and a master's degree and doctorate in Education from Columbia University. She is also a researcher at Conicet and directs the Science Education program at the University of San Andrés. Researches the formation of scientific thinking from kindergarten to university.
Dr. Furman contributed to CILAC by writing a policy brief on science education in the region, and will be present, in turn, on Tuesday, October 23, as a panelist at the high-level session on science education.
In order to present his latest book “Guide to Raising Curious Children” at the International Book Fair in Montevideo, he gave an interview to the radio program “Don't touch anything”, broadcast on Radio del Sol. In the note he talked about what the scientific thinking, the importance of observing and constructing arguments about the world around us; and maintained that curiosity is essential, especially for those who do not work in the scientific field, to do daily tasks better.
The researcher has already participated in other events as a speaker, such as the TEDx talks, and has published, in addition to the one she presented on October 9, three books: “Natural sciences: learning to do research at school” (2001) , “Social sciences: an approach to knowledge of the social environment” (2009), and “The adventure of teaching natural sciences” (2009). Both in these and in “Guide to Raising Curious Children”, he highlights the importance of intuition, and how valuable the learning process is, regardless of the result obtained.
Within the framework of CILAC 2018, Dr. Furman will participate on Tuesday, October 23, in the session on science education. It will analyze the current state of science education in primary schools in the region, and the teaching principles endorsed internationally. The session proposes to debate advances and challenges to introduce and improve the teaching of Natural Sciences, positioning teachers as agents of transformation of the educational system.
