World Science Forum 2017, Jordan, November 7 – 11.

Science for peace.

On Wednesday, November 8, within the framework of the World Science Forum in Amman, Jordan, the UNESCO Regional Science Office for Latin America and the Caribbean will have a special session, titled 'Scientific cooperation and regional integration for the 2030 Agenda in LAC'.

In line with the general theme of this year's World Forum: 'Science for Peace', this discussion will offer ideas and solutions on how to foster scientific cooperation in the region and present the CILAC Forum as a comprehensive space to forge and strengthen regional cooperation. CILAC 2018, the second edition of the Latin American and Caribbean Open Science Forum will take place in October 2018, in Panama City, Panama.

Some of the areas that will be addressed in this session will include: how to promote integrated approaches among LAC countries; regional research funding; the interface between science-politics and society; cross-learning platforms to encourage smart benchmarking between countries and communities; science education to strengthen citizenship and democracy for sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The session will be moderated by the UNESCO Regional Director of Sciences for Latin America and the Caribbean, Lidia Brito. Your approach to promoting dialogue and exchange between the expert panelists and the audience will be similar to that of a journalistic-style discussion. Expert panelists include the Minister of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation (MINCYT) of Argentina, Lino Barañao, the Director of Business Innovation of the National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation (SENACYT) of Panama, Víctor Sánchez Urrutia, the Mayor of the City of Montevideo, Uruguay, Daniel Martínez, and the General Director of ColCiencias, Colombia, Cesar Ocampo.

According to Lidia Brito, "advancing the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean requires new integrated and innovative approaches and regional collaboration to make the most of the potential of science to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Therefore, this session aims to reinforce CILAC as a tool that contributes to building a sustainable future in Latin America and the Caribbean.

We invite you to join us on Wednesday, November 8, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., King Hussein Bin Talal Convention Centre, Dead Sea 1 – Sea Floor.
