CILAC 2018: Open Science forum for Latin America and the Caribbean was presented at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting, ‘serving society through science policy’ held from the 15th -20th February in Boston Massachusetts.

The AAAS annual meeting on Science & Technology Policy, brings together the science and policy communities from throughout the world, to exchange ideas and to discuss the future of science and technology.

Sandra Sharman, Public Engagement and Communication Coordinator for the Open Science forum for Latin America and the Caribbean presented CILAC in a session titled Global Conference Start-Ups: Inclusive Science and Society Engagement. This session brought together key personalities behind prominent science conference start-ups, spotlighting new voices at the nexus of science and society from five continents.

From Science Agora Tokyo and Science Forum South Africa to EuroScience Open Forum in Toulouse, from CILAC: Open Science Forum for Latin America and the Caribbean and the Korean Science and Creativity Conference to the World Science Forum Jordan, these event champions gathered at AAAS Annual Meeting to promote new pluralistic and creative spaces for collective thinking about the best tools, tactics, and techniques for meaningful public engagement.

Acknowledging the societal problems does not necessarily have scientific solutions. The panel argued that dialogue, diplomacy and inclusiveness will contribute to scientific research.
