The Organization of Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) is an international non-profit organization, headquartered at the offices of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), in Trieste, Italy, a UNESCO program unit.
It is the first international forum that unites women scientists from developing and developed countries, to strengthen their role in the development process and promote their representation in scientific and technological leadership. To achieve this, it promotes scholarships and recognition for those women who stand out as researchers and actors for change.
This August 31, the deadline to apply for the scholarship that the organization offers to female scientists ends. It consists of up to USD50,000 in two years, financing that can be used for different expenses: equipment, research visits, exchanges, application of programs, teaching, information resources, product development and links with the industry, dissemination, networks or others. The scholarship recipients will also participate in two training workshops on leadership and business skills. The application must be sent through the organization website and the email available to clarify doubts is earlycareer@owsd.net.
In addition to scholarships, the organization awards, together with the Elsevier Foundation, and TWAS, five women scientists in the early stages of their careers. Female scientists who received their doctorate in the last 10 years, and have lived and worked for the last three years in one of the developing countries mentioned in the list, are eligible. organization page. Subject areas eligible for awards vary from year to year; for the 2019 awards are the biological sciences: agriculture, biology and medicine.
The competition will be judged by a distinguished panel of international scientists, including members of TWAS, OWSD and the International Center for Theoretical Physics. Judging will be based on achievements in the given field, where winners must have had a demonstrable impact on the research environment both regionally and internationally and have often overcome great challenges to achieve research excellence.
Each winner receives a $5,000 cash prize and an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). They are also given the opportunity to attend workshops and sessions at said meeting, and visit local laboratories or institutions. Both this event and the celebration dinner organized by the Elsevier Foundation are important networking opportunities.
