There is a very common saying among the British that the devil hides in the details. Perhaps that is why the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879) devised an imp and made him play with the details of one of the principles of thermodynamics. A scientific joke with which Maxwell became entangled in a most curious thought experiment.
