The CILAC 2016 Forum will receive thirty Rectors of Universities from Latin America and the Caribbean

Thirty top authorities from public universities in the Region will travel to Uruguay to participate in the Forum of Rectors of Latin America and the Caribbean – CILAC 2016 (Wednesday, September 7, 4:00 p.m., Assembly room of the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay, LATU). The meeting has been convened by the Association of Universities of the Montevideo Group (AUGM), co-organizing institution of the CILAC Forum (September 7-9), within the framework of the celebration of its twenty-fifth anniversary.

In the words of Cecilia Fernández, Pro-rector of Research at the University of the Republic, host institution of the Rectors' Forum: “The University celebrates the coincidence of both events, with the understanding that they reinforce the priority of advancing as a Region in challenges such as such as the need to constantly build universities for development – now in the context of the 2030 Agenda, the cultivation of the relationship between science and citizenship, as well as science for business innovation, all of them thematic axes proposed by the CILAC Forum and priority of the Association.”

All the AUGM member universities from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay, together with institutions such as the National Association of Leaders of the Federais Higher Education Institutions (ANDIFES, Brazil), the National Association of Universities of Higher Education Institutions (ANUIES, Mexico), the Colombian Association of Universities (ASCUN, Colombia), the National Interuniversity Council (CIN, Argentina); he National Council of Universities (CNU, Nicaragua), and the Ministry of Higher Education of Cuba, among others.

The Rectors' Forum will seek to strengthen cooperation on Science, Technology and Innovation issues between universities in Latin America and the Caribbean, to advance the design of a regional agenda on these issues.

For the President of the Association, Juan Manuel Zolezzi Cid, a new period begins for the AUGM in which they must “continue working to face new challenges in the context of a dynamic Latin America in the process of transformation. With this spirit, the Association takes as a priority task the strengthening of the Latin American and Caribbean Space for Higher Education”, an instance that has also motivated the expansion of participation in the Forum to other actors in the Region.

For CILAC, the enormous challenges of our time, framed in the 2030 Development Agenda, require the interdisciplinary and multisectoral collaboration of all. The public involvement of actors such as the Association of Universities of the Montevideo Group (AUGM) in the search and discovery of new knowledge is fundamental for sustainable development.

Within the thematic axis Universities for the development of CILAC, the European University Association For its part, it will offer a discussion on the promotion of local development by universities through international cooperation, on Friday, September 9 from 10:00 to 11:15 (CDC Room 1).
