On June 22, 2017, the official launch of the second edition of the open science forum for Latin America and the Caribbean: CILAC 2018 took place at the Miraflores of the Panama Canal Visitor Center and was attended by more than 100 guests including a series of key and associated institutions of CILAC 2018 from Panama and other countries of the Ibero-American region, including Argentina and Spain. Also, there were more than 20 journalists and media representatives who covered the event.
Welcome remarks by the Vice President of the Panama Canal Authority, Oscar Vallerino, were followed by speeches by the National Director of Innovation of the National Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation of the Republic of Panama (SENACYT), Mr. Victor Sánchez Urrutia and the Deputy Director-General of UNESCO for Natural Sciences, Ms. Flavia Schlegel.
In her speech, Ms. Flavia Schlegel, emphasized UNESCO's commitments to the governments and people of Latin America and the Caribbean to strengthen the use of science to build peaceful societies and sustainable development in the region. He said: "The world is unique and diverse and therefore our problems and our solutions must not be hampered by borders and isolation, but built on dialogue and compromise. These are the fundamental elements that CILAC offers so strongly.
Mr. Víctor Sánchez Urrutia, followed by reaffirming SENACYT's commitments to hold the open science forum successfully. He said that "Panama is ready to receive CILAC 2018 and the scientific, technological and innovative community of all of Latin America and the Caribbean."
On October 22 to 24, 2018, Panama City will host the second edition of CILAC, an open forum for Latin America and the Caribbean. The forum is free for everyone, where there will be daily public activities in all parts of the city, inviting citizens to connect with science, technology and innovation, through culture and the arts.
