Panama, June 22, 2017. Panama City is proud to host the second edition of the Open Forum CILAC, which is the main regional platform to discuss how to design and implement effective scientific policies in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The launch will take place at the Visitor Center of the Panama Canal Miraflores Locks. The event will count on welcome remarks made by the Vice-President of the Panama Canal Authority, Mr Oscar Vallarino along with speeches by Mr Victor Sánchez Urrutia and special guest Ms Flavia Schlegel, UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences, as well as the participation of diverse actors from the scientific, technological and academic world of Panama and the region.

The National Secretariat for Science, Technology and Innovation of the Republic of Panama (SENACYT) in cooperation with the UNESCO Regional Office for Science in Latin America and the Caribbean, the Mayor of Panama City, the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB), and other national and regional entities will collaborate to realize the Second edition of the Open Science Forum for Latin America and the Caribbean; formulated around the motto «Science Connects».

CILAC 2018 continues and project its goals set out in the inauguration of the first edition, held in the city of Montevideo in 2016, which is to create a regional agenda for science, technology and innovation, that contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals in Latin America and the Caribbean.

It is conference unique of its kind, that connects future researchers with leading scientists, young entrepreneurs with business and corporate leaders, visionaries and innovators with policy-makers, artists, designers, inventors and engineers, scientific journalists and research centers. All of them confronted by the enormous challenges of our time, which requires the interdisciplinary and multisectoral collaboration from all societies in Latin American and Caribbean.

CILAC has transcended from a Latin American and Caribbean event to a global initiative, with the participation of representatives from all continents that have come together to produce a strategy that promotes science for sustainable development.

The City of Panama will host this international event, and will be the setting for free for all daily public activities inviting citizens to connect with science, technology and innovation, through culture and arts, including theatre, dance, informal talks, performances and demonstrations.

The Mayor of Panama City, as part of the organization of this important conference, calls on all citizens to take part in the forum because “Science Connects.”
