The President of the Republic, Tabaré Vázquez, inaugurated this morning the Latin American Open Science Forum, which takes place at the LATU facilities and will continue until Friday.

The president referred to the importance of politics to generate the well-being of citizens, but Politics with a capital letter, he specified.
In the opening speech of the forum made a quote from Albert Einstein to exemplify the objectives of science and scientists.
Before an audience made up mainly of attendees from universities abroad, Vázquez highlighted the importance of Plan Ceibal and explained to those present what it is about.
This activity is established as a regional space for debate and exchange, and It will be organized every two years on an itinerant basis in different cities in the region.
The activities will revolve around five thematic axes: scientific policies, universities for development, cultivating sciences and citizenship, sciences for the 2030 Agenda, and sciences for business innovation, on which the participation of some 280 speakers from around the world is expected.
In addition, leading scientists and researchers will present the results and projection of their work within the framework of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Likewise, participants will have spaces dedicated to plenary conferences, thematic sessions, parallel events, exhibitions and decentralized activities.
In turn, ministers and other science, technology and innovation authorities from 15 countries will attend the event, in which rectors from 30 public universities in the region will also participate.
Cilac seeks to establish itself as a platform to define common positions around a scientific agenda for sustainable development, and bring the voice of the region to the global level of the World Science Forum.
This event is organized by the UNESCO Regional Science Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, the Municipality of Montevideo, the National Agency for Innovation and Research, the University of the Republic, and the Association of Universities Group Montevideo.
It will be held within the framework of the 50th anniversary of Castala, the first Conference on the Application of Science and Technology to the Development of Latin America, organized by UNESCO in cooperation with the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
This instance will be the meeting point between future researchers with top-level scientists, young entrepreneurs with business and corporation leaders, visionaries and innovators with politicians, artists, designers, inventors and engineers and journalists.
The closing of this initiative will be on September 9 and is aimed at the general public., who must register in advance on the official website of the Forum.
